Eating Out

Happy Cow

Possibly the most famous vegan app, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention HappyCow.

This app allows you to find delicious vegan food wherever you go. It also distinguishes between restaurants that are completely vegetarian and vegan and those with veg-options, so that you have more choices.

HappyCow is also a real lifesaver when traveling. Thanks to its recommendations, I had some of the best vegan food of my life in rural Mexico and I’m not even sweating an upcoming trip to Ecuador!

HappyCow

Overall, HappyCow is a must-try app!

A great app for all the pre-vegans out there interested in transitioning to a vegan diet.

VeganXpress

Picture it: you’ve been on the road for hours and you’re starving. You take the next exit you see. Ravenous, you wander into the rest area only to find that it’s all fast food.

Don’t despair!

This app is here to save the day. Just search for any North American chain restaurant and VeganXpress will tell you exactly what menu items are vegan.

You can also look up popular grocery store items. At $1.99, it’s a steal.

VeganXpress

McDonald’s puts beef fat in the fries so how do you know what you’re getting? It’s been a huge headache for me but this app really makes things easier by letting you know what’s vegan and what’s not.

VeggieBeers

Asking if something is vegan can be awkward, especially if it’s at a crowded bar on a Friday night and the bartender is overwhelmed. Don’t be the customer that makes the staff’s life harder.

Instead, check for yourself if your alcoholic drink of choice is vegan. You can also see which ones are vegetarian and gluten-free (spoiler: most of them are not gluten-free, but it’s nice that this app tries).

VeggieBeers

They have a wide range of drinks, from household names like Jack Daniels to more obscure brands, like Rekorderlig. If you drink, this free app is a must.

Awesome and super comprehensive. Of course there are going to be brews not listed on here, but this is amazingly comprehensive, I never have trouble finding something I want to buy when I’m using this app at the liquor store.

Veggie Alternatives

This app is essential, especially for any new vegan. Organized by categories of dairy, meat, and other, Veggie Alternatives lists vegan products to replace these staples. It also lists recipes, such as their page on whipped cream.

Even cooler, this app was created by a 15-year-old student from Europe. The 100s of recommendations will help you forget all about animal products.

Veggie Alternatives

A great app for all the pre-vegans out there interested in transitioning to a vegan diet.

Oh She Glows

This is the app version of the popular vegan recipe blog, Oh She Glows by Angela Liddon.

I am a huge fan of this site - the strawberry chia oat bars were a hit at work. It also includes gluten free and soy free recipes, making it extra useful for those with allergies.

The app is beautifully designed and allows you to check off ingredients as you shop as wells as directions as you cook.

Oh She Glows

If you want easy access to delicious, healthy recipes, for the low price of $1.99, then this is the app for you!

Brilliant app for tasty meals which are actually good for you. Must for anyone turning veggie/vegan.

Do Eat Raw

A treasure trove of delicious raw vegan recipes, Do Eat Raw is a fantastic way to break out of your culinary comfort zone.

Going 100% raw is out of reach for most of us, but incorporating more raw foods into your diet is a great way to eat more healthily,  or just to change up your routine.

Do Eat Raw has you covered from the typical smoothies to the unexpected, like crackers and breads. For $1.30 or less, you can get over 300 raw vegan recipes in this mobile “un-cookbook.”

Do Eat Raw

I am struggling to transition to a vegan lifestyle and this makes it so much easier. I was pretty much los[t] when it came to what to eat and making sure I got enough calories and carbs. This helps so much!! Thank you!

Gonutss - Vegan Translator

You’re probably wondering what exactly a “vegan translator” is. Similar to some aforementioned apps, Gonutss gives vegan food product recommendations.

What sets this app apart from the rest is the baking calculator.

Say you want to bake a favorite childhood recipe, but it contains eggs. Simply enter the number of eggs you need and presto! The baking calculator tells you how much of an ingredient you need to replace the eggs for binding.

Gonutss - Vegan Translator

Best of all, Gonutss gives you lots of substitution options so you’re almost certain to find one you have on hand.

I love this app! It works perfect. There’s so many recipes and food ideas. I found food I didn’t even know was vegan. So glad I found this app.

Tasty Vegan Recipes

We all know and love the Tasty video series from Buzzfeed that pop up on our Facebook feeds and make us instantly crave whatever they cook up. Sadly though, most of the Tasty videos are not vegan.

Fortunately for us, someone compiled all of the vegan Tasty recipes into an app just for our convenience! They even put the description box with ingredients and directions below. While the app does have quite a few ads, it’s still a keeper in my book.

Tasty Vegan Recipes

It could be organized a bit better. Definitely tasty recipes though, so the app does live up to its name.

CodeCheck

Not only great for vegans, CodeCheck allows you to scan the barcodes of products and filter them based on your values.

Want to know if the potato chips you grabbed are vegan? What about their supply chain?

What about your lipstick’s animal testing policy? Or if your face wash has microbeads? Just scan for information about whatever packaged good you’ve been wondering about.

CodeCheck

"Is It Vegan?"

This app is a very handy tool for scanning barcodes of food items and being able to quickly gauge how likely a product is of being vegan in-store.

You can search for products in three ways - by using your device's camera as a barcode scanner, by manually entering the barcode alphanumerical value, or by simply typing in the product you want to search.

When you read the reviews of this app, you'll find out that it isn't perfect. For example, one reviewer mentioned how he scanned a stick of butter and it said it was vegan.

From my experience, I found that it does a good job with popular food items that most new vegans ask "Is that vegan" about.

Give this app and CodeCheck a try and see what works best for you.

Is it vegan?

"I LOVE this app!!! Thank you so much it's been a life saver, specially if you are a new Vegan!"

Vegan Additives

This is another great app, especially for people who have food sensitivities.

Vegan Additives lists whether or not common food additives are vegan (you know, those long chemical-sounding mystery words on the ingredients label).

This app also gives the chemical breakdown as well as what foods these additives are found in. Did you know that Riboflavin-5’-Sodium Phosphate is vegan? Now you do, thanks to Vegan Additives.

Vegan Additives

Fantastic super handy app!

Cruelty-Free

Cruelty-Free is the app manifestation of the Leaping Bunny Certification, which is one of the highest standards for cruelty-free cosmetics. This app allows you to search cosmetics to see which brands are cruelty-free.

While this is a great tool, remember that “cruelty-free” refers to animal testing and does not necessarily mean that a product is vegan.

For example, Burt’s Bees products contain the Leaping Bunny Certification but are not vegan because they contain beeswax.

Cruelty-Free

I absolutely love apps that are informative. I am against certain makeup products that are made out of animals. Cruelty to animals is a no no. I love this app A LOT!

Thrive Market

By now you’ve likely heard of Thrive Market - the online discount health food store. Through both their website and app, Thrive Market offers a plethora of healthy vegan staples to round out your pantry for cheaper than most health food stores.

Delivered straight to your door, this makes veganism easier for those who do not live close to healthy grocery options.

The app is free, but Thrive Market does have an annual membership fee of $39.

Thrive Market

I received my first order and it was packaged beautifully, nothing was damaged and I received everything I ordered. Thrive Market had dozens of items that I have never seen before. Organic, non-GMO, vegan, etc. I’m beyond happy with the items I ordered.

Animal-Free

This award-winning app is an essential for all vegans.

Animal-free is a robust resource guide with nearly every ingredient, vitamin, and mineral known to humanity, neatly divided into two categories: animal ingredients and vegan ingredients.

See an ingredient on a label that you don’t recognize?

Scroll to the first letter of that ingredient on the animal and vegan sides to find out if you can eat it. I guarantee you will learn something about your food from this app.

Animal-Free

Awesome. This helps shed some light on the disgusting disease filled stuff they try to feed people. Very helpful. I definitely see being a vegan in my future. Thank you for creating this app.

Cronometer

A standby both inside and outside of the vegan community, Cronometer is a free calorie counter and nutrition tracker.

While eating a vegan diet is often very healthy, it’s important to make sure you are getting enough vitamins, especially when it comes to B12 and calcium.

Cronometer is a great tool to help you keep track of your health. It’s also great to show people who wonder where you get your protein from.

Cronometer

This app is fantastic. Most of the food I’ve scanned is in the database with all nutritional profiles. You can add full recipes...once a recipe is saved you can easily add it by saving it to your favorites. Over the moon.
